What Adobe Firefly does

Firefly is Adobe's generative media application and the engine behind generative features inside Photoshop, Illustrator and Express. The web app covers text-to-image, generative fill, vector generation, image-to-video and simple audio tasks, with a board feature for collecting and iterating on work. Its distinguishing feature is provenance: Adobe trained its own models on licensed and public-domain material, publishes Content Credentials with output, and offers indemnification for enterprise customers, which matters to legal and brand teams. Firefly also exposes selected third-party models inside the same interface, so you can compare results without leaving the app. It suits designers already working in Creative Cloud, in-house teams with compliance requirements, and marketing departments producing volume. The limitation is raw quality: on pure aesthetics Firefly's own image models are competent rather than leading, and the generous free allowance disappears quickly once you move to the higher-quality modes.

How to use it

Sign in at firefly.adobe.com with an Adobe ID; a Creative Cloud subscription is not required to start, and a monthly allowance of generative credits is included free. The first run is a prompt in the text-to-image module, with controls for aspect ratio, content type, colour and composition along the side rather than buried in prompt syntax. From there you can send an image straight into generative fill to replace or extend regions, or into the video module. The part people misjudge is credits. Standard image generations are cheap, but video and the premium models consume credits fast, and once you run out, generation slows or stops until the next cycle rather than failing outright. If you use Photoshop, note that the same credit pool covers generative fill there, so heavy retouching competes with standalone generation. Team and enterprise plans add larger pools, shared libraries and the indemnification terms that make Firefly attractive to compliance-conscious organisations.

Best for

  • brand-safe generation
  • generative fill
  • vector artwork
  • marketing production
  • Creative Cloud workflows

Strengths and limitations

What it does well

  • Licensing and indemnification suit corporate use.
  • Integrated with Photoshop, Illustrator and Express.
  • Content Credentials attached to output.
  • Several third-party models available in one interface.

Where it falls short

  • Image quality trails the leading art-focused models.
  • Credit consumption is easy to underestimate, especially for video.
  • Best value depends on already paying for Creative Cloud.
