What Google Flow does

Flow is Google's video creation tool, built around the Veo model family and aimed at assembling scenes rather than producing one clip at a time. It combines text-to-video and image-to-video generation with a scene builder for extending shots, a camera control panel, asset management for characters and locations, and native audio generation so dialogue, ambience and effects arrive with the picture. Because it draws on Google's image models for reference stills, you can design a subject first and then carry it into motion. It suits storytellers, advertising teams and anyone who wants continuity across several shots instead of isolated fragments. Availability is tied to a Google AI subscription and varies by country, which is the main practical limitation, along with strict content filters that refuse recognisable people and many brand or violence-adjacent prompts, sometimes without a clear explanation of what triggered the refusal.

How to use it

Go to labs.google/flow and sign in with a Google account; access and generation limits depend on which Google AI subscription tier you hold, and the tool is not available in every country. A project opens as a board of scenes rather than a single prompt box. The workflow that works best is to create ingredients first: generate or upload images for your character, setting and props, save them as assets, then reference those assets in each shot so appearance carries across. Use the extend feature to continue a clip from its final frame instead of generating a longer prompt from scratch. Audio is generated with the video by default, so describe the sound you want in the prompt, including dialogue in quotation marks. The two common frustrations are quota and moderation. Generations draw on a monthly credit allowance that premium tiers consume quickly, and the safety filters reject prompts involving real people and many brands, so plan for refusals.

Best for

  • multi-shot sequences
  • native audio scenes
  • narrative concepts
  • ad storyboards
  • character continuity

Strengths and limitations

What it does well

  • Generates synchronised audio with the video.
  • Asset system keeps characters and settings consistent.
  • Scene builder supports extending and sequencing shots.
  • Strong prompt adherence from the underlying models.

Where it falls short

  • Requires a paid Google subscription and is not available everywhere.
  • Content filters reject many prompts without clear reasons.
  • Credit allowances are consumed quickly at higher quality.
